The highway north out of Corfu town isn't the best introduction to the island. A dreary motorway through a commercial wasteland ends at island's main marina and ferry stop at Gouvia. Just before then and merged into is the resort of KONTOKALI. Despite its noisy neighbour it manages some charm with subdued nightlife and good tavernas and bars though each year the two get closer and it only a matter of time before Kontokali is completely swamped. There are two beaches both sand and pebbles, if you can see any of it for the sun beds. One beach is in front of the massive Kontokali Beach Hotel, but it's not private. There are showers and you can even rent beach towels. It's shallow in the water, particularly between the two groins and watersports areas are cordoned off. The other beach to the north is smaller and used more by the locals. In Kontokali village are scores of shops and restaurants, the remains of a castle and, north along the coast, an ancient Venetian shipyard. Big supermarkets are found on the main road with the Diellias hypermarket at the Gouvia turnoff if you want to stock up.

Accommodation is available within the village and in the area around. Food is abundant in the taverns of the area, where you will find fresh fish, local dishes and a wide range of Greek and international delicacies. You may swim at the beautiful, cosmopolitan and crowded in summer, beach in front of the village, but the area around offers several alternatives too. Most of the beaches are popular and stylish. A local feast (“panighyri”) is organized in the village in May or June, in honor of Holy Spirit.
Kontokali beach is very well organized, with swimming and sunbathing facilities (sun beds, umbrellas, toilets and showers). In its major part there are not facilities for sea sports, which makes it more peaceful and safer. The sea is shallow and safe, which makes it popular to families with small children. You may enjoy a drink or have a light meal at the cafe of the beach. You will also meet peddlers selling cheese-pies, sandwiches and refreshments at the beach.
